The decline of the PC

It was bound to happen – the humble PC is on the decline, as global shipments see a slump in growth figures for the first 3 months of the year, compared with the same period over the last decade.

Whilst PC sales in consumer markets seem to be slowing down, in comparison, the business market is still relatively buoyant, as the PC remains as the device of choice for many business users.

It’s fair to say, this decline in sales doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as the trends in home technology will see us regularly opt for more mobility with the use of phones and tablets over the more cumbersome, static PC options.

So, what does this mean for the future of our business PCs? Is this the beginning of the end?

Well, firstly, it’s worth noting that PCs are certainly going to remain part of the business infrastructure for some years and whilst the consumer markets continues to shrink, the business markets are forecast to remain fairly stable for the foreseeable. However, what this does pose is an argument that emerging technology that we benefit from in the home could well be seen more frequently in the office. As the demands for remote working increase and businesses start to expand their footprint, often on a global scale, the static PC starts to become obsolete, in favour of portable devices such as the Lenovo Yoga or the iPad Mini.

In addition to this, as technology is advancing at such a fast rate, the solutions of today will not be the solutions of tomorrow. Although we don’t have a crystal ball, when you start to consider the business benefits with some of the new and emerging technology, why wouldn’t businesses want to take advantage of this?

Business IT in the future might see us using docking stations, turning our smartphones into PCs, or utilising portable devices, to be able to find more comfort, compared with the often-uncomfortable desk.  Either way you look at it, the PC will become a thing of the past, in favour of agile working solutions.
