Future-proofing for 2017 - Cloud

Taking a look at Cloud

As we head towards a new year, we wanted to highlight some of the solutions and best practices for future-proofing your company. The first in this series is ‘Cloud’.

Many of us understand the Cloud: its features, benefits and of course its functionality, although many of us don’t fully understand what we are asking for when we request a ‘piece of the Cloud’.

Let’s go back to basics and work through some ground level understanding.

Cloud Defined

The Cloud refers to any application or IT system that is housed off-site. It’s literally that straightforward.

When businesses consider future-proofing their company, Cloud will often be the topic of conversation. It will allow an agile approach to business growth and provides businesses with a predictable fixed monthly cost that many businesses will prefer over the capital outlay required to house their IT systems and infrastructure on-site. Equally, as more businesses opt to incorporate common remote working methodologies such as RDS and VPN as common practice, or begin to embrace Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) schemes, there is an increasing need for multi-location access – something that Cloud-based applications do very well.

That said, Cloud isn’t necessarily right for everyone and just because your mate has Cloud doesn’t mean it’s right for you and your business. In fact, for a sizable business, going fully Cloud supported would not always be the right option, as at some point you are going to want the support and manpower provided by your IT support company.

So what is Cloud good for?

Email

Many businesses use Cloud for its email applications, also known as Hosted Exchange Email.

Data Backup

Off-site email archiving and data storage are imperative when you consider just how much of our work is done over email now. Whether your business has a legal requirement to journal and archive your data, or whether it’s just from a data protection or other internal reason, cloud presents the perfect way to achieve this.

Disaster Recovery

In the event of a disaster, having Cloud-based applications and backups is a great way of ensuring you don’t lose any valuable data and can reinstate and recover to a suitable level (called your Recovery Point Objective or RPO) and within an acceptable timeframe (referred to as your Recovery Time Objective or RTO). Cloud-based disaster recovery solutions can range from simple file and folder backups all the way up to instant-on replicas of your infrastructure to make recovering near-instant.

Fixed monthly costs

As Cloud-based applications are subscriptions based on the rental of equipment and space, not only is there no upfront hardware or software costs, but the monthly fees are a fixed amount per month which you can generally guarantee as part of a contract.

Let me sum it up

All things considered, Cloud-based applications and IT systems can often be a great solution for many businesses. It’s imperative to do the research ahead of making the commitment to make sure the option is viable for your business.
