The future of unified communications

The digital era is steadily transforming the way we operate and do business, and it looks like even something as straight forward as Unified Communications could be getting a digital shake up. Forget Skype and similar, Cisco have teamed up with Virtual Reality company Oculus Rift to develop an application that will literally bring people together, virtually. It’s the perfect playing field for this duo, and to be honest, one that I’m surprised hasn’t been brought to market sooner. When you think about why businesses utilise unified communications, it’s generally to unite colleagues regardless of their location and bring people together.  Unlike video calling, multiple users will be able to meet and interact with their professional connections in an environment of their choosing, through the Spark platform technology.

It’s not the first time VR has been used in a business environment, it’s been used as an effective tool in car manufacturers such as Volvo and Ford for some years. This is however, an exciting time for VR. Up to now, it’s generally been thought of as a gaming peripheral, and hasn’t really been able to establish a strong business case for a more general and widespread adoption within the B2B market place. If this technology can take hold, not only will it mean an easier and more human way of connecting with a global workforce, but it will mean VR can finally take centre stage in the office location.
