The GDPR countdown is on

2018 is going to be a significant year for data protection, as the current Data Protection Act is 20 years old, some might say it’s time for a change. Well a change is coming in the form of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), an EU regulation that will come into full force on the 25th May 2018.

What will change?

This is a loaded question. For some businesses the new regulation will have little impact and for others the changes will be noticeable and require careful planning. The first thing to consider is that the GDPR puts the control firmly in the hands of the data subject. In other words, businesses that communicate to an ‘individual’ rather than a business, will need to focus on the detail contained within the GDPR, to ensure that when data subjects ask to be removed from communications, this request is actioned successfully. In addition, businesses will need to comply with consent request reforms; ensure data access is aligned to roles and responsibilities; have much tighter methods for detecting and recording any possible data breaches and make sure their data is securely stored.
